-Chapter Nine-

“Gallade” came a steady voice.

His head jerked up to gaze at the pitch-black Pokemon there before him.

“Take me to her.”

“T-to her…?” he muttered, unsure at first. When it was clear that he wanted to see Alice, he jumped up abruptly, taking Darkrai’s hand. “Y-yes! Of course!”

Moments later, the two weary Pokemon stood before the expansive door leading in.  Gallade hesitated, looking uncomfortable.

After a silent minute, Darkrai eased forward and slammed his fist against the door loudly. He pounded again at it, and again until finally there was a response behind the wall.

“Hang on a second!!” a stressed voice that was so obviously Tonio’s, screeched.

Darkrai backed up some as the golden sideways latch clicked and the door swung open.

The two stood for a quiet moment as they drank in each others’ site. A cross look ate Tonio’s face. “What do you want--?”

Without a word, Darkrai pushed forward, ignoring the man. The door had been locked. All he needed was for someone on the inside to open it, not that person to start up a fight.

“HEY!!” he shouted after the Pokemon as he made his way in, searching the mazelike hallways.

Gallade, still slightly shaken from the previous events, bowed unsteadily to the baffled man and rushed inside after his friend.

“HEY!!” Tonio repeated loudly. “What are you—“ his angry voice choked into a stifled cry as Darkrai turned into their bedroom. “S-stay outta there! Leave her alone, you!”

He didn’t care what the man had to say.

All he wanted was to see his Alice.

“Alice…” his voice rasped. It sounded like sandpaper or a gentle breeze making its way through autumn leaves. “Alice…”

She did not stir on the wide bed. Her face was soft, devoid of showing the slightest hint of any nightmares that could have been haunting her.

Gallade glanced around, bewildered at what he saw around them. The setting was grand to say in the very least. If he thought the outside terrace or garden was impressive, he was guaranteed to see another thing coming once he stepped foot inside. He nearly had forgotten the reason he was inside to begin with and quickly took off after Darkrai, skidding into the room after nearly passing it.

What he saw almost threw him off in a way.

Darkrai was leaning over her, his arms across her chest, head down. It took Gallade a moment to understand the scene, but when his eyes came to focus, he realised what it was that was going on.

He was mourning.

Mourning his mistake. His own foolishness.

That had cost her so much.

“…Darkrai?” he asked softly, cautiously, sliding into the room quietly.

Tonio was not far behind him, and not very quiet about it.

“DARKRAI!! Stay away from her—“ he stopped dead.

There was silence then. No one spoke. The only sound a long moment later was Darkrai straightening, away from looking down on Alice’s angelic face. He stole a glance at the still Tonio.

“I…” he began lowly. “…am sorry.”

Tonio only nodded. “It was a mistake, then?”

“Let me stay here.” The hovering Pokemon nearly demanded. It was a statement, not a question, as if everything was already understood.

“Darkrai,” Tonio said as if repeating his name after being ignored. He turned to look at the man. “It was a mistake then? You… didn’t mean to do it?”

“No.”

Tonio sighed with what almost seemed like relief. It was as if he needed to hear the Pokemon before him say it before he would let it go. “Is that true?” he asked again, wanting to hear it once more.

“Yes.”

He nodded slowly, then glanced over to Gallade equally. “Will you stay with him, just in case?”

I will,” he would say, but of course his words sounded nothing more than gibberish to the ignorant human.

Night fell. The moon shone bright and true, filtering in through the crystalline windows. Gallade was of course soundly asleep, but Darkrai was surely not.
It was around 10pm, the time when the moon had a tendency to peek in through the windows facing out, had a tendency to spy on whoever should stand behind them, waiting, silent, ever-present.

Darkrai sat beneath the bed Alice lay asleep on, his eyes glistening with the wavering moonlight outside. For reasons he couldn’t explain, he wished to be out there… under the light itself, not a shadow of the real thing behind a glass window. He stared longingly at it for a moment longer than he had intended and shook himself gently; returning his gaze upon a sleeping Alice who seemed would never wake.

He knew he had the power to withhold that very same power, knew he had the way to undo what he had done to her, but he was drawing a blank. He had not an idea, nothing… about how to help her awaken.

Her awakening depended solely on Alice alone now.

He was still recovering from whatever had ailed him, the side effects as they had been called, slowly wearing off. But still present as to blur his vision even now in the slightest.

However he would not allow it to hinder his being there. With Gallade as his aide, he would be allowed to stay, be allowed to stay with his beloved Alice.
Something rustled beside him and he glanced down away from her angelic face to find it was Gallade who had stirred himself to awareness.

“Mh…? Darkrai? Oh… that’s right… we’re not in the Garden anymore…” he rambled, his voice cracking with sleep.

Darkrai simple nodded under the moonlight.

“Did you… need anything?” he asked, pressing for a more fitting answer.

“No.” the pitch-black Pokemon replied softly, trying courteously not to startle him again. Blurred vision or not, he didn’t want to see tears in his friend’s eyes again. “But thank you.”

With an apprehensive Gallade spending the night next to him, a glaring moon and worry deep enough to choke a Ponyta, he knew it was going to be a long night.

lolwtf... that last line, 'worry deep enough to choke a ponyta' is a spin-off of the phrase 'choke a horse' if no one noticed. :XD:;
